The argonata pictured has serious damage to the shell. The shells that I have seen washed up on the beach almost never have extensive damage. The creature when it is alive and not afraid covers the entire shell with a very thin membrane that allows dramatic color changes. It is also normal for the tentacles to very neatly and completely cover the aperture of the shell when swimming. I have observed the argonauta to be very rapid and accurate swimmers, sometimes swimming in formation. I have found very little information on the lifetime and habits of these creatures. Do you know any good references?

Thanks! I plan to eventually do “Ten Terrific Squids” (or something like that), and considering how long this octopus post took me to assemble, I’d better get started now!

Isn’t the blanket octopus cool? It seems to me that that little trick they do with the Portuguese Man ‘o War tentacles should qualify as tool use!
